Face it: the bad boys have what it takes to ensure personal survival. That got their genes passed down to succeeding generations.

• Even if women did like nice guys, the bad ones would still win because they take multiple opportunities. They may hit on dozens of women a night and get blown off by most of them. They seize opportunities and this approach works.

Meanwhile, you may spend the entire night working up the guts to ask just one woman out. When she declines, your ego is shattered and your world crumbles. It may be days or weeks before you can even think about asking another woman out.

Ultimately, the these other men just do not care about the women they are after. This makes it easy for them to deal with rejection. Not affected by one woman's decline, they just move on to the next woman, who may very well say yes because she is lonely or because she has been turning guys down all night and is afraid that there will not be any more offers.

• Why has she been turning away men all night? Modern sensibilities have made many women feel a little guilty about the often inevitable end of a night out on the town. She needs to convince herself that a man convinced her to surrender to him. She absolutely does not want to think that it was her idea. Therefore, she says no almost outright and plays hard to get all night. It is not so much that the nice guy did not attract her. He is just not persistent enough to let convince herself that it was his idea and not hers.
